OPEN ROADS ARE NOT AN INVITATION TO SPEED - THE COPS ARE STILL OUT THERE
On May 2 and May 3, 2020, Virginia State Police shared on Facebook several tickets they have issued recently, including: an individual going 124 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone, and other speeders going 108 mph, 115, mph, and 132 mph. The Virginia State Police shared that they are seeing an increase in speeding tickets and speed related fatalities on Virginia Roads, and this increase has been seen since the Governor’s State of Emergency issued on March 13, 2020. With more people staying home, there are much fewer cars on the road and people are seeing this as an opportunity to speed. The cops are still out there and it is still illegal to speed. If you are speeding, you are putting yourself and others in danger.
Virginia is very strict on speeders. If you are traveling at any speed in excess of 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, or any speed over 80 miles per hour, it is considered reckless driving. A reckless driving ticket carries with it higher fees and punishments than a speeding ticket and should you receive one, you should take it very seriously. If you are charged with speeding in excess of 90 miles per hour, you could be facing jail time. For any charge of Reckless driving You should consider retaining counsel.
